Bellbrook Middle School students raised nearly $800 this week with a change war to benefit Pink Ribbon Girls, an organization that assists families enduring cancer treatment.

The class that raised the most money – the seventh graders – also got to smash pies in the face of Assistant principal Jenna Hill and Principal Jeff Eckley.

The teachers with the most money in their jars at the end of the day Thursday were “elected” by their students to receive the grand prize of a whipped cream pie in the face.

“Your actions made a really positive influence on our community,” Hill said to each of the classes during their class meetings before the “pieing” took place Friday morning.

Hill and Eckley along with HOPE Squad advisors Jaime Burnham and Ben Trick, took the time to talk about Hope Week next week, put on by the HOPE squad. It will effectively be another Spirit week with dress-up days for the students and staff.

Tuesday is role-reversal day (Students dress as teachers and teachers dress as students), Wednesday is holiday-themed and students can dress as their favorite holiday, Thursday is Super Hero day (not all heroes wear capes), and Friday is Red day.

Half of the funds will go to a local family fighting cancer while the other half goes to benefit Pink Ribbon Girls. Last year, the funds raised in the change war purchased about 150 meals for families struggling with cancer. The organization provides meals, peer support, rides to appointments and house cleaning essentials, according to Vicki Varvel, who was in attendance.

Hill said there’s another portion of the charity event going on now involving the teachers, and she hopes the donation total will be closer to $1,000.
