ART MATTERS
Careers in the 21st century will demand creative and innovative thinkers who can communicate and collaborate across cultures. Art encourages critical thinking, creativity, communication, and collaboration. These higher-order thinking skills are critical for students to learn in order to live productively in our emerging global society.

DevicE Expectations
We prefer to positively recognize students who make smART choices & follow the rules. Daily tickets are distributed for those who show respect and responsibility and come to class prepared with a positive attitude! If a student is stepping on the rights of others, they may be asked to step outside the classroom and given a behavior form to take home and complete. If it is not completed and returned, then a detention is served. Detentions will automatically be given for serious offenses.
he Job of an artist is to offer a sanctuary of beauty to an UGLY world. Jeff Goins
Beginning of Class
Students should enter quietly and prepare for class. All belongings must be stored in assigned locker, except a pencil! Students should read the attendance question, get out any supplies from needed from their table cubby and be in their seats BEFORE the bell rings.
On Mondays, students should start their class going over their playlist for the week. If the Chromebook is not needed for the remainder of the class, it will need to stored properly in a locker or hung on a chair, NOT placed on the floor.
During class
There are three sections of class time: Skill Builder, Instruction and Studio Time. Skill Builder is an activity in their sketchbook or a mini assignment and is a focused time to build a skill and studio habits. These are formative assessments.
Instruction is when I will teach a new skill or demonstrate the next step of a project
Studio time is work time. When the studio is open, students must be working on art. If they are truly finished with a project, there are enrichment options.
Instruction,Students should remain in their seat unless instructed otherwise. All projects are done in class therefore time management and focus are very important. While you do not need to work in silence, we need to keep talking to a minimum and respect all others working with a low noise level. Sharing ideas and encouragement, however, is part of our art process and we will have times to talk and discuss!
Work space should be kept as clean as possible and supplies accounted for while working.
Sink should only be used when asked or instructed.
Remember, no phones which also means no ear buds!
Finishing projects
After you take a photograph of your artwork, make sure your name and EAGLE teacher is on the back and place it in the turn-in bin underneath the drying rack. This is how I know it is complete!
Reflecting on your artwork and sharing your thoughts about the art making process is an important part of art. You will complete exit tickets and/or small reflections as you work on and complete your artwork.
"Art work is never finished, only abandoned."
~Leonardo DaVinci
While waiting for new instruction or assignments, you will have drawing prompt assignments that you may continue to work on or pick an enrichment activity to enhance your studio habits.
END Of class
Clean up is a team effort and you will be instructed when to complete your job; we cannot turn the room into chaos. You will be notified via sound when studio time is over and clean-up must begin and you will each have a job and work as a table.
Artwork is always taken care of first, then supplies, which must be cleaned and returned properly to the supply counter.
Once your job is complete, you are to wait quietly by your seat.
Classroom Jobs
Each week students will be assigned a job according seat assignment. These jobs are an important part of helping make our classroom run smoothly, teaches responsibility, and ensures that the work is fairly shared. Docents and Curators will substitute for students who are absent.
Clean Up Routines
Summative Assessment
All assignments will be turned in via Google Classroom. Students will submit a photo of their artwork. Summative assessments make up 80% of a student's grade.
Grading art isn't subjective, it's qualitative. Instead of tallying the number of right answers, an art teacher assesses the qualities of the work, such as choice of subject, handling of media, and control of the composition. That means, incidentally, that it's harder to grade art than a spelling test, an arithmetic quiz, or a multiple choice history exam. In general, it's hard to grade any assignment where the answers don't fit neatly on a computer card.
Grading art is a way to give students constructive feedback on their learning and practice, and to be reasonably consistent about the standards we ask each student to meet.
Grading art with a rubric fairly assesses 4 qualities of any work of art and allows for feedback. The subject, techniques, and medium may change with each assignment, but the criteria remains the same.
Assessing art is about the processes, not the final product. Creating in the studio is project based learning and the multi-step processes facilitate growth in many areas. The learning happens in the doing, therefore assessment begins from the first sketch to the end product.
Formative Assessment
Studio Habits of Mind
Learning art techniques is only the beginning! Studio Habits of Mind are skills and strategies that help you confront the unknown, solve problems creatively, and articulate your decisions clearly. Building strong habits helps you develop an artistic mindset and create sophisticated artwork. Students will have various forms of formative assessment including drawing challenges, worksheets, sketchbook prompts, exit tickets and reflections.
DUE DATES
Students will have one week grace period to finish a project.
After that week , students must petition and explain to me why more time is needed; however, more regular class time will not be given. Students must ask for an EAGLE Pass and see me to complete work. Students who do not talk to me about goals for completion will receive a partial grade.
Artwork takes time to create and also time to grade. Assignments will be assessed and recorded in a timely manner. Loss of instructional time is difficult to recreate. Upon returning to school following an absence, students must obtain an EAGLE pass to request instruction missed.. Students will be given the same amount of time to make up the work as the student was absent unless other arrangements are mutually agreed upon.
Missing projects will be marked missing UNTIL it they are turned in. If projects have already been graded, you must notify your teacher that you have turned your assignment in late. Grades will change, but a late turn in may result in waiting for a grade change. Patience is appreciated.
The Building Blocks and how the are organized are used by artists of all kinds to create aesthetically pleasing art.
