Bellbrook wins award for 21st consecutive year

Bellbrook Middle School Wins the Governor's Thomas Edison Award for Excellence in STEM Education for the 21st consecutive year!!

We have some exciting news to share with you.  We just received official notification from the Ohio Academy of Science the Bellbrook Middle School has earned the Governor's Thomas Edison Award for Excellence in STEM Education and Student Research for the accomplishment during the 2016-17 school year.  For Bellbrook Middle School, this the 21st consecutive year (And it is the 27th consecutive year for Mrs. Cathy St. Pierre).

Only 58 Ohio schools and 509 teachers merited this prestigious award.  Thirteen Bellbrook Middle School educators were selected for this award.  They are Kayla Bruggeman, Nate Doolos, Tammy Bacich, Crystal Current, Kyle Ferguson, Kim Lord, Cathy St. Pierre, Debi Schwieterman, Allie Bisignani, Jennifer St. Pierre, Shelby Sigman, Lynzee Johnson and Ellen Guthrie.

The criteria for the Thomas Edison Award for Excellence are (1) to conduct a local science fair with 12 or more students, (2) qualify two or more of those students for one of the Academy's 16 district science days, (3) have students participate in at least one more youth science opportunity beyond the classroom such as State Science Day, business and industry, government and academia employers how and to what extent the school's program met the Academy's definition of STEM education.

"These schools and teachers push the boundaries of the traditional classroom by advising and mentoring student-originated research and other hands-on experience," said Michael E. Woytek, the Academy's CEO.  First established in 1985, the Governor's Thomas Edison Awards recognizes Ohio schools and teachers who stimulate scientific student research and technological design and extend youth science opportunities beyond the classroom, including State Science Day, The Ohio Academy of Science Annual Meeting, Buckeye Science and Engineering Fair, Science Olympiad and other structured STEM-related youth activities.

Mrs. Cathy St. Pierre comments, "This award is evidence of the strong support in our Bellbrook-Sugarcreek community.  It is recognition for the achievement of our students, along with the tremendous support of our administration, parents, and community members.  Congratulations to our students, parents, schools and Bellbrook community for fostering such excellence!  We thank you for your support and continued encouragement."
